Defend the Dungeon
A smug horned dungeon lord lounges on a bone throne sipping tea, surrounded by bespectacled goblin clerks, a grinning green slime and a toothy mimic chest, while a backlit party of heroes with a sword, staff and lute appears in the great doorway.

The heroes are coming.
Again.

Every Tuesday it's the same thing. A paladin, a rogue, a bard who won't stop singing, all "here to vanquish evil," all tracking mud across the treasury. You are the evil. You have a lair to run, gold to guard and a going cold. Defend the dungeon.

MEMORANDUM · ALL MINIONS · RE: HEROES

It has come to my attention that heroes keep reaching the throne room. This is unacceptable. The throne room is for me, my tea and quarterly reviews.

Effective immediately: every room gets a defender. Goblins slow them down. Slimes eat armor. The mimic eats rogues (please stop feeding it rogues between raids). Trolls hit hard but fall asleep to music, so somebody deal with the bard.

Budget is one hundred gold per raid. Spend it wisely. I will be checking.

Plan tonight's defense

Read the scouting report, then pick a defender for each of the five rooms between the front door and your throne. Each one has a price, and each hero has a weakness. Then open the doors.

Scouting report

Gold left: 100 / 100

A torchlit guard room: bespectacled goblin minions in tiny helmets play cards around a barrel with sandwiches and mugs, a sleepy troll sips from a teacup, a skeleton mops the floor, a rat sits in a little cage and a blank board hangs on the wall.

    Now hiring

In the full game you build the lair room by room, raise a minion workforce, keep morale up (goblins unionize), and defend the gold against ever-more-competent heroes. Real-time, top-down, and very much on the wrong side.
